Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! Whether your married 50 years, or newly single, we think it’s a time to celebrate love- the love that you have for your husband, your kids, or your best friend. Or maybe you want to celebrate the love that you have for yourself! Not all Valentine’s gifts have to be elaborate. In fact, this whole guide is gifts under $50!
Let’s start with the obvious gifts…
And now, onto the less obvious Valentine’s Day gifts…
And finally, the other perfect Valentine’s Day gift is enjoying the company of the ones you love. There is no better place than the Apple Barrel Cafe, and no better time than My Funny Valentine! We welcome back Friar’s Club Comedian Greg Aidala for a third year of laughs! 3 course dinner & comedy show is just $44.98 per person. We sell out every year so make your reservations soon!
This weekend we will be celebrating 34 years in business. It’s an amazing feat to accomplish and we couldn’t have done this without your support. Over the past 34 years we have had some incredible experiences. We’ve held numerous events, including our annual Holiday Shopper’s Night and Girlfriend’s Night. Do you remember events of the past like our Haunted House? Or how about classes of the past like Tole Painting?
We’ve been voted Best Restaurant in Schoharie County by Capital Region Living Magazine every year since we’ve opened, won 3 Trip Advisor Certificates of Excellence, and have been written about in numerous publications. We’ve hosted local celebrities like Greg Aidala and Katie Manning- Hilton, as well as politicians, Senator Kristen Gillibrand, Assemblyman Jim Seward and many others.
We’ve been super active in our community and are always willing to give back. To date we’ve donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to local charities. After Hurricane Irene we also donated free meals to all of the volunteers working to get our town back on it’s feet.
And that’s just the beginning. If I wrote about all of the experiences over the last 34 years, it would be a novel. Albeit, a great novel. But I want to hear from you. Comment below with one of your favorite experiences or stories of the Apple Barrel over the last 34 years. We’ll have Sue Loden pick her favorite and that person will receive a $34 gift certificate!
We can’t wait to hear from you!
I don’t know about you, but this week has sure made me feel chilled! Old Man Winter has definitely arrived. Normally, I cringe at the thought of winter. My blood definitely runs warm and my body would love to be someplace warm, but my heart keeps me here in NY with my family, the Apple Barrel, and all of you. However, this year I am hygge-ing my way through winter.
Last year, my husband and I were fortunate enough to go to Denmark and while there learned all about hygge. Hygge is a Danish word, but so much more than just that. It truly is an art, a way of life. Hygge is pronounced “hooga” and roughly translates to “coziness”. From VisitDenmark.com, “In essence, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. The warm glow of candlelight is hygge. Friends and family – that’s hygge too. There’s nothing more hygge than sitting round a table, discussing the big and small things in life.”
So what can you do to hygge your way through winter? Well here are some great ideas to start!

From her website, “Larissa Loden designs for women that aren’t afraid to express themselves. They are strong and fearless, interested in history and love to dress up. She is inspired by stories behind the pieces and those wearing them, and feeds off seeing her jewelry complete a look.
Vintage meets modern in Larissa’s eco-friendly collection. Most components used are deadstock, which means they were made to be sold long ago but missed their chance. Traveling across the US and Europe, Larissa explores the depths of flea markets and deadstock warehouses to find cameos, switchblades and lockets. She gives these vintage treasures a new opportunity to shine by transforming them into modern, edgy jewelry.
Whether on the hunt for unique objects or hammering them into hot bracelets, it’s all about the process. Once Larissa and her loot have safely returned to the Twin Cities, she doesn’t go far to start creating new designs. Larissa’s studio and home are one in the same, no factory involved. Using methods including drilling and soldering, stamping and hammering, her collection is fervently handmade.
Hailing from a very small town in upstate New York, Larissa learned the inner workings of a business early on by working in her parents’ store. She became part of the family business when she was old enough to polish an apple.
Larissa established her own company in 2005 and has been forging jewelry ever since. She continues to push harder to create modern pieces that tell a story. She hopes to establish Larissa Loden Jewelry as a national brand and one day open a flagship store.”

I decided to try the Splendid Dirt mask after getting a rave review about it from a customer. After a long day, I grabbed my foot spa, some nail polish, a great magazine and some Kaydeross Kreme ice cream ready to settle in for a bit of pampering and indulgence.
I rubbed the mask on and it smelled like… pumpkin pie! Splendid Dirt has lots of fabulous pumpkin puree and yogurt in the mask. From their website, “Get dirty! Red, blotchy, and oily skin- you’ve met your mask. Splendid Dirt is a natural, nutrient-rich pot of Illite and Bentonite clays, fresh enzyme-full pumpkin puree, and active yogurt cultures that instantly boosts overall radiance by deep cleansing pores, temporarily shrinking their look, and improving the look of broken capillaries and uneven skin tones. This thick blended puree goes on whipped and velvety smooth, bringing a party-orange pumpkin face that might scare the neighbors, but will seriously de-gunk and help purify even the most congested skin.
You’ll feel Splendid Dirt working- a mild tingling sensation begins as oxygenation and circulation increases. The feeling is temporary, and as the mask dries, skin is actually left calmed and soothed, decreasing everyday blotchiness. It is recommended for all skin types, except those with sensitive skin, at least once per week. We LOVE it after using One Fine Day Flawless Face Polish!
99.6% natural, and like all FarmHouse Fresh products, it is Paraben and Sulfate Free.”
And they were right! Not only was the smell irresistible the mask created a great tingling feeling on my skin. I left the mask on for about an hour (far longer than necessary but I couldn’t get over the smell). After rinsing the mask off my face I couldn’t wait to take a look in the mirror to see the results. The redness and blotchiness of my face was dramatically reduced. The biggest difference was the size of my pores- hugely reduced! The results are amazing!
Can’t wait to try some of the other FarmHouse Fresh products! Maybe the Bourbon Bubbler scrub?! Get some now at our website.
